“On the slow train…”, shades of Flanders and Swann drift through my head as we head towards Hemel Hempstead at a very leisurely pace on the way to Northampton. I could say that I paid twice the price to travel on-peak at half the speed, but I can’t complain. I have tasted the (pleasant enough) air of the capital in early summer, dodged foreign tourists, walked from Euston to Westminster, had a good meeting, sweated in the Tube and am now making gentle progress back to Northampton to deliver a minimally-scripted talk to the Kingsthorpe Mothers’ Union. The sun is shining, I’ve been fed and the Church of England is paying the train fare: what’s not to like?
