Nostalgia is bad for your health 8 March 2010

Nostalgia is bad for your health. As you look backwards not only do your eyes suffer, as you start to see things as they weren’t, but you also stand a far greater chance of falling into the traps of today!

The problems may have been different, but they were still problems. There was never a Golden Age, so seeking to re-create it is futile. We certainly should look to learn from the past, look for parallels and patterns, but we shouldn’t live in it or seek to slavishly recreate it.

That said, human nature does not change, and “moral progress” is probably an illusion, or far, far slower than we like to think. Circumstances change, but human nature doesn’t.

(All this is apropos of no one particular individual, place or situation. I have no axe to grind, just an initially humorous thought in mind!)

I don’t know, I think it is sometimes good when we reconstruct a gentler, happier past than the one that existed. Perhaps the key is realising that perhaps imagination is more useful than memory when it comes to trying to make the world better.
