Celebrating Winter 13 February 2007

Another of David’s wonderful poems…

Soon enough bare branches
reaching out skywards
like tilted antlers
will flood into leaf as the sap surges.

Eager to make the most of winter
and not to wish it away unheeded,
I count its many blessings,
not least the companionship of the chilled
which huddles us together
and takes a friend’s arm in case he slips.

Perhaps there is mercy in severity if we but see it.
And, like a plunge into a cold bath,
it can shake the soul into deeper inspiration
