Not just bleakness 7 December 2005

A few days ago my friend David sent me his latest poem, spawned in depression. Now as the events of my week unfold (see previous post), it seems more appropriate that ever.

*Not Just Bleakness*
Skeletal tree in barren garden,
stripped and bare
in December air
bereft of sunshine’s startling pardon,

Grace and gift that drives out darkness.
But light is dying
like frail leaves lying
gaunt and pale in winter’s fastness.

Yet in each yearly deadly leisure
life remains
in unseen veins
till earth releases buried treasure.

That’s stunning…and resonates with feelings of deadly exhaustion and general futility in these parts too. Maybe time to read Donne’s Nocturnal on St Lucie’s day too
